Not only do we want to make sure they are functioning smoke alarms in your home but did you know that where they are placed makes a difference in alerting a resident of a fire emergency? It is highly recommended that a smoke alarm be placed in every bedroom, outside of the bedrooms in the hallway, and on every level of the home. Regardless of the type of smoke detector you choose for your home please make sure they are working properly and don't forget to test them every month.

Here's some additional guidance from the National Fire Protection Association:

- Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement
- It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms so that when one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound
- Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working
- A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire
- Working smoke alarms are an important part of a home fire escape plan
